For reflection and fun. The birth-totem and Celtic systems are modern creations inspired by older traditions, not official calendars.

How your birthday points to a spirit animal

There isn’t one single “birthday spirit animal.” Several traditions around the world have tied birth dates to animals, and the tool above reads your date against the three best known: the Native American birth totem (based on the month and day you were born), the Celtic animal sign (also by date), and the Chinese zodiac (based on your birth year).

Each one grew out of a different culture and a different way of seeing the year, so it’s normal to get three different animals. Think of them as three lenses on the same person rather than three answers competing to be right.

Each system below gets its own chart and a short, honest note on where it comes from, because some of these traditions are ancient and some are modern, and it’s worth knowing which is which.

Your Native American birth totem

The birth totem system assigns an animal to each stretch of the year, in twelve periods of about a month each. It’s the one most people mean when they search for a spirit animal by birthday.

On where it comes from: Sun Bear (an Ojibwe teacher) and Wabun Wind created this particular system in the 1980s, in their book The Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology.

It draws on Native American ideas about the medicine wheel and living in step with the seasons, but it is a modern synthesis rather than an ancient pan-tribal calendar, so treat it with that context and respect rather than as something every Indigenous nation shares.

The full spirit animal birthday chart for the birth totems follows. Find the row your birthday falls in:

Birth datesBirth totemIn a word

So if someone asks what their September spirit animal is, it depends on the date: early September (up to the 21st) is the Bear, and late September (from the 22nd) is the Raven. Every month sits across two totems like this, which is why the day matters as much as the month.

Your Celtic animal sign

The Celtic animal zodiac is a second by-date system, with thirteen signs to match the Celtic lunar year.

Celtic reverence for animals and the natural world runs deep, but the “Celtic animal zodiac” as it circulates online today is a modern creation: the ancient Celts left no written zodiac of their own, and date ranges vary a little from source to source.

Treat it as a fun, symbolic lens rather than documented history. Here’s a common version:

Your Chinese zodiac animal

The third animal comes from your birth year rather than your date, and it’s the one people mean when they search for a spirit animal by birthday and year.

Unlike the two above, the Chinese zodiac is ancient and still celebrated every Lunar New Year: twelve animals rotating in a fixed cycle, each year carrying the character of its animal.

One thing to watch: the Chinese year begins at Lunar New Year (late January or February), so if you were born in January or early February, your sign may be the previous year’s animal.

AnimalRecent birth yearsIn a word
Rat2008, 2020Clever, quick
Ox2009, 2021Steady, dependable
Tiger2010, 2022Brave, confident
Rabbit2011, 2023Gentle, kind
Dragon2012, 2024Bold, charismatic
Snake2013, 2025Wise, intuitive
Horse2002, 2014, 2026Free, energetic
Goat2003, 2015Gentle, creative
Monkey2004, 2016Witty, curious
Rooster2005, 2017Observant, honest
Dog2006, 2018Loyal, sincere
Pig2007, 2019Generous, easygoing

The cycle repeats every twelve years, so to go further back, subtract twelve from any year in the table (2026 is the Horse, so is 1966 and 1954).

What if your three animals don’t match?

They usually won’t, and that’s the point. You might be a Bear in the birth-totem system, a Swan in the Celtic one, and a Dragon by Chinese year.

Rather than picking a “winner,” read all three and notice which description makes you nod. You may find that one of the three feels true straight away, one feels aspirational, and one points at a side of you that you forget about.

All three are mirrors for reflection. None of it is fortune-telling, and none of it determines anything about your life.

Frequently asked questions

What is my spirit animal by birthday?

Your birthday lines up with an animal in three traditions: a Native American birth totem and a Celtic animal (both based on your month and day), and a Chinese zodiac animal (based on your birth year). Enter your date in the tool above to see all three at once, or find your date range in the charts on this page.

Is the birthday spirit animal the same as a “real” spirit animal?

Not quite. A birth totem comes from your date, like a star sign. What many people think of as a personal spirit animal or animal guide is something you feel a deeper, chosen kinship with, which may or may not be your birth totem. Both are worth exploring; they just come from different ideas.

Why did I get three different animals?

Because the three systems come from three different cultures and measure different things: two by date and one by year. Three different animals is the normal result, and each one highlights a different side of you.

What is my spirit animal if I was born in September?

In the birth-totem system, a September birthday is the Bear up to the 21st and the Raven from the 22nd onward. Use the tool or the chart above for the exact date, since the changeover falls mid-month.
